Pre-Trip: Our Pre-Trip Preparations...
When we started packing for this journey, there were
many seemingly insurmountable challenges ... having only two weeks to get ready,
needing heavy winter clothing, bringing enough lightweight entertainment for an
almost 5 year old plus all the supplies (medical and otherwise) that a baby
might need, being prepared to stay four weeks or more, and being able to bring
only 44 lbs. per person (Kazakhstan's Air Astana baggage limit) as opposed to
the 140 lbs. per person allowed by Lufthansa. Well, somehow we did
it! We're bringing two carry-ons a piece (2 rolling suitcases, 1 backpack
and 1 diaper bag), Sierra's little "Rapunzel" carry-on/backpack, 1
large suitcase for Dave, 1 large duffel for Amy and Sierra, 1 large duffel for
the baby, and another large duffel with donations for the orphanages and gifts
for the caregivers. While we're pretty close to the weight limit for each
piece of luggage, we've ended up with one extra duffel so we're hoping we won't
be charged for the excess.
Below you'll find pictures of Sierra reading to her
babies in one of the suitcases and then again sitting on all of the luggage just
before we left the house.
